Facts About Our Skeletal System

bullet

The skeletal system determines the shape of the body.

bullet

Your skeleton protects your vital organs such as your brain, heart and lungs.

bullet

There are 206 bones in the human body.

bullet

Your skeleton provides strength and support.

bullet

It works closely together with the muscular system to allow you to move.

bullet

The skeletal system is made up of your bones, ligaments, and tendons.

bullet

Ligaments connect bones to bones.

bullet

Tendons connect bones to muscles.

bullet

Your bones are made from cartilage. This is a tough, flexible material that hardens as you grow.

bullet

Smooth and slippery cartilage covers the ends of the bones to reduce friction during the movement.

bullet

Most bones are hollow with marrow cells inside.

There are 4 types of joints:

1. Your upper arm and shoulder are joined by a ball and socket joint. Your thigh and pelvis are also joined by a ball and socket joint. These joints allow your arm and leg to move in several directions.

2. Your knee and elbow are hinge joints. These joints allow your forearm and lower leg to swing back and forth.

3. You have pivot joints in your wrists and ankles. This allows your hands and feet to move in several directions.

4. Your skull joints are extremely strong in order to keep the bones in your skull immovable.
